Dorchester County Warrant Process

Warrants in Dorchester County follow the same rules as the rest of Maryland. An arrest warrant requires a showing of probable cause before a judge or commissioner. Under Maryland Rule 4-212, the warrant must list the person's name, the charge, and the issuing judge. Once signed, the warrant stays active until it is served or recalled by the court. Dorchester County law enforcement enters all active warrants into the METERS database so that officers across the state can see them.

Bench warrants come up when someone misses a court date. Under Maryland Rule 4-347, a judge can issue a bench warrant right from the bench if a person fails to show. The person can be picked up by police at any time after that. In Dorchester County, bench warrants are the most common type you will see in Case Search. These often appear as "Failure to Appear" entries in the system. Search warrants are a separate matter. They must describe the place to be searched and the items police expect to find, per Criminal Procedure Article 1-203. They expire after 15 days.

Child support warrants also come through Dorchester County courts. These are civil in nature and are enforced by the Department of Human Services. They can lead to arrest if a parent falls far behind on payments.
